Outerwear
Outerwear piece types range from all different materials and styles including bombers, denim, moto jackets, utility jackets, and more. By sourcing new price point targeted materials and researching outerwear markets, we as a team have developed fun cost effective outerwear to layer over other piece types in the collection each season. Below are just a few of the final product images from my outerwear work at Mud Pie.
Project Highlight: Porter Utility Jacket
The Concept
Apply market research to sketch and create a utility jacket for the Mud Pie consumer. Research utility styles and techniques to determine what features to include while hitting our consumer price point.
The Challenges
Negotiating costs between manufacturers and dual sourcing pricing from multiples countries to meet our price point were a few challenges with this style. My team and I managed to create a jacket with multiple technical features while hitting our target margin. Features include two functional breast pockets with snap button closures, waist pockets, decorative seams/stitching, snap button front and zipper closure, and an adjustable waist tie for cinching the jacket's waist.
The Results
The utility jacket worked in multiple fabrics. We created this style in cotton twill and a tencel and dual sourced this style with two countries. It was tricky to get the same fit and details across both countries and negotiate pricing to hit our cost margin. Still, the work resulted in a perfect outerwear silhouette that we can expand on in future seasons.
Project Highlight: Winchester Belted Coat
The Concept
Research outerwear and materials to create a coat that functioned as a blazer and a coat. Find a good quality lining that is affordable and develop a construction to stay within our cost parameters.
The Challenges
Achieving the perfect collar shape was a technical challenge that I handled quickly and proficiently. I initially designed the collar following a previous silhouette that I cut and shaped to a new collar form and created the Winchester specs. After the first initial sample arrived, I adjusted the pattern to correct the collar shape and made additional fit adjustments. Making the pattern adjustments helped reduce sample time and close the fit and construction early in development.
